Care & Maintenance Guide

Protecting the Beauty and Longevity of Your Investment

Thank you for choosing TileMeisterKY LLC.

A professionally installed tile or natural stone surface is built to provide decades of beauty and performance. Like any premium finish in your home, it requires proper care and routine maintenance to continue looking its best.

This guide outlines the recommended care for your tile, stone, grout, sealants, and waterproofing systems. Following these guidelines will help maximize the life of your installation and preserve your Workmanship Warranty.

Important: Failure to properly maintain your installation may void applicable workmanship warranty coverage.

The First 72 Hours

After your installation is complete:

  • Avoid heavy foot traffic for at least 24 hours, unless otherwise instructed.
  • Keep grout and sealants dry for at least 72 hours, or as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Do not place heavy furniture or equipment on newly installed surfaces during the curing period.
  • Maintain normal indoor temperatures whenever possible.

General Cleaning Guidelines

For routine maintenance:

  • Sweep, vacuum, or dust regularly.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner designed for tile or natural stone.
  • Wipe up spills promptly.
  • Use microfiber mops, soft cloths, or other non-abrasive cleaning tools.

Never Use

  • Bleach
  • Vinegar
  • Ammonia
  • Acidic cleaners
  • Abrasive powders
  • Steel wool
  • Wire brushes
  • Harsh degreasers
  • Steam cleaners unless specifically approved for your installation

Using improper cleaning products can permanently damage grout, sealers, natural stone, and tile finishes.

Ceramic & Porcelain Tile

Ceramic and porcelain tile are among the easiest flooring and wall finishes to maintain.

Recommended Care

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral tile cleaner.
  • Remove standing water when practical.
  • Inspect grout and caulk annually.

Avoid

  • Abrasive scrub pads
  • Acidic cleaning products
  • Impact damage from dropped tools or heavy objects

Natural Stone Care

Natural stone is beautiful because every piece is unique. Unlike manufactured tile, stone requires ongoing maintenance to preserve its appearance.

Examples include:

  • Marble
  • Travertine
  • Limestone
  • Slate
  • Quartzite
  • Granite
  • Onyx

Natural stone may contain:

  • Veining
  • Pits
  • Fossils
  • Color variation
  • Surface movement
  • Other naturally occurring characteristics

These features are normal and are not considered defects.

Stone Sealing

Most natural stone requires periodic resealing.

Typical guidelines:

  • Interior dry areas: Every 2–5 years
  • Showers: Every 1–3 years
  • High-use wet areas: Annually or as needed

Actual sealing frequency depends on:

  • Water quality
  • Daily use
  • Cleaning habits
  • Type of sealer used

A simple water-drop test can help determine if resealing is needed. If water darkens the stone instead of beading on the surface, it’s likely time to reseal.

Failure to maintain proper sealing may lead to:

  • Staining
  • Water penetration
  • Efflorescence
  • Surface deterioration

These conditions are considered maintenance issues and are not covered under warranty.

Grout Care

Traditional cement-based grout is porous and may require periodic sealing.

Recommended maintenance:

  • Clean regularly using pH-neutral products.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Reseal as recommended by the sealer manufacturer.
  • Remove standing water whenever practical.

Minor hairline cracks may occur over time due to normal building movement and are not necessarily workmanship defects.

Epoxy Grout

Epoxy grout is highly stain resistant and generally does not require sealing.

For best results:

  • Clean using manufacturer-approved products.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaning methods.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.

Caulk & Silicone Joints

Caulk and silicone joints are designed to absorb normal building movement. Because they are flexible materials, they are considered routine maintenance items and will eventually require replacement.

Inspect these areas at least once each year:

  • Shower corners
  • Tub surrounds
  • Countertop transitions
  • Floor-to-wall transitions
  • Backsplashes

If you notice cracking, separation, deterioration, mold, or mildew, the affected caulk should be replaced promptly.

Routine caulk replacement is normal homeowner maintenance and is not covered under the workmanship warranty.

Shower Maintenance

Proper ventilation is one of the best ways to extend the life of your shower.

After each use:

  • Run the exhaust fan for 20–30 minutes.
  • Wipe excess water from walls and glass when practical.
  • Leave shower doors or curtains partially open to improve drying.

Regularly:

  • Inspect grout and caulk.
  • Address plumbing leaks immediately.
  • Remove soap residue.
  • Maintain proper ventilation.

Excess moisture can contribute to mold, mildew, staining, and other conditions that are not covered under warranty.

Hard Water & Mineral Deposits

Hard water can leave behind:

  • White residue
  • Mineral buildup
  • Glass staining
  • Surface discoloration

Regular cleaning helps prevent permanent deposits.

If your home has hard water, consider installing a water-softening system.

TileMeisterKY LLC is not responsible for hard water staining or mineral deposits.

Exterior Tile Installations

For exterior installations:

  • Remove standing water whenever possible.
  • Avoid using metal shovels on tile surfaces.
  • Use only de-icing products approved for your installation.

Freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal movement are natural environmental conditions outside our control.

Building Movement

Every home experiences natural expansion, contraction, and settlement over time.

Normal movement may result in:

  • Hairline grout cracks
  • Minor separation at movement joints
  • Caulk deterioration

These are common maintenance items and are generally not considered workmanship defects.

Warranty Limitations

The TileMeisterKY LLC workmanship warranty does not cover damage or failures resulting from:

  • Improper maintenance
  • Failure to seal grout or natural stone when required
  • Use of improper cleaning products
  • Structural movement
  • Foundation settlement
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Appliance leaks
  • Water intrusion unrelated to our work
  • Abuse or misuse
  • Inadequate ventilation
  • Mold or mildew resulting from insufficient maintenance
